Principal Duties: Responsible for the oversight and administration of the Land Use & Development Department, and provides for the supervision, development, and management of staff. Coordinates with other organizations, agencies and governmental entities. Implements and evaluates the guidelines, principles, and policies of land use proposals and development for Shawnee County. Sets and implements the Land Use & Development Department budget. Serves as secretary to the Planning Commission and Board of Zoning Appeals, and prepares presentations of projects, programs, and policies to present to the Board of County Commissioners and Planning Commission.
Planning & Zoning Administrator

Principal Duties: Responds to inquiries and requests for technical assistance related to land use, planning projects, zoning and subdivision regulations, site development, special and conditional use permits. Advises the Director of Land Use & Development on planning and development issues. Evaluates and processes land use proposals and applications. Conducts research on parcels under consideration for development, conditional use permits, and rezoning. Investigates alleged violations of applicable zoning and Floodplain codes and regulations, and proposes enforcement solutions.
Planning & Development Coordinators
Principal Duties: Coordinates the management of planning cases and permit applications; reviews and evaluates applications and ensures compliance with zoning, subdivision, floodplain and other adopted codes and regulations. Provides overall support to the Director of Land Use & Development and Planning & Zoning Administrator. Assists with compilation of the Department's budget; oversees accounting and payroll operations for the office.
Planning Specialist

Principal Duties: The first point of contact to the Land Use & Development Department; responsible for providing specialized administrative support to the department, including the initial intake and processing of permit and case applications, processing payments, responding to inquiries from the public, utilizing the county GIS system to research parcels, collecting and assembling data for cases, maintaining department records, and providing accounting and payroll assistance.
Environmental Health Manager

Principal Duties: Responsible for supervision of all Environmental Health Programs; supervises and performs work technical in nature that is designed to ensure that contractors and other regulated businesses are complying with applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations including, but not limited to, school inspections, nuisances, Local Environmental Protection Program (LEPP), septic systems/installation, air quality, refuse, landfills, mold, bedbugs, lead, and rabies.

Principal Duties: Performs technical and professional work to ensure contractors and/or other regulated businesses and the public are complying with applicable Federal, State and local Environmental Health laws and regulations.
Account Clerk II

Principal Duties: Acts as the primary contact for the public for information about the environmental health program; performs bookkeeping work in the auditing and keeping of account payables and accounts receivables; organizes and maintains the clerical operations.

The Shawnee County Land Use & Development Department is located at the Shawnee County North Annex,
1515 NW Saline Street,
in the Topeka Industrial and Business Park. For easy access, take US 75 Highway and exit at NW Lower Silver Lake Road and go east for approximately three-quarters of a mile, turn south on NW Saline Street and go one block to the Shawnee County Annex.
