As part of our ongoing mission to ensure that inmates and juvenile residents receive the highest level of professional correctional medical and mental health care, the Shawnee County Department of Corrections contracts with Armor Correctional Health Care (Armor). Armor is an emerging national leader in providing quality healthcare services in correctional facilities, emphasizing the use of quality data analytics to improve efficiencies that allow more of the providers' time to go toward direct patient care. Armor works alongside department staff in setting healthcare standards and achieving accreditation from the National Commission on Correctional Healthcare and American Correctional Association.
Medical Care: In coordination with Armor, the facility provides a range of medical services to meet the needs of inmates or residents. Twenty-four-hour-a-day medical services are provided at the facility. An initial health screening is conducted on all inmates and residents at the time of booking. A process is in place to respond to daily requests for medical care, whether a sick call, a chronic care clinic, or medication. Inmates who have the need are placed into a housing unit in direct proximity to medical staff to address any needs that arise.
Mental Health Care: A team of qualified behavioral health professionals are on staff to assist inmates or residents who have identified mental health needs. Every incoming inmate and resident receives a screening to determine mental health needs. Mental health care includes handling acute events as well as ongoing psychotropic medication and counseling needs. In addition, inmates needing mental health assistance are worked with to transition safely to services in the community upon release.
Confidentiality: The medical status of each inmate and resident is considered confidential. Due to the application of federal laws respecting the confidentiality of medical records, medical related information regarding any of our inmates or residents will require a Release of Information signed by the inmate or resident, or a legally appointed guardian.
The Department is authorized to seek reimbursement for the costs incurred in provision of the off-site care, through all means available under laws governing collection of debts.
Off-Site Services: When services for an inmate or resident require the use of off-site resources, the costs for those services will be charged to the inmate, under Kansas law. If an inmate is covered by an insurance program, it is important for that coverage information to be available so that the costs for eligible off-site services can be covered without it being charged directly to the inmate.
