Job Title: Trial Assistant
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Pay Range $18-23 per hour (DOQ)
Overview
Trial Assistants in the District Attorney's Office provide support to the attorneys and assist with case processing. Trial Assistants also work directly with victims and witnesses to ensure their rights are protected and to prepare them for any required testimony. Job duties may require the exercise of some independence in the conduct of standard duties and any special assigned tasks. Crucial to success in this position is a person who is detail oriented and has a mature attitude, a strong work ethic, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment. This position has access to sensitive and confidential information and must maintain confidentiality at all times.
Primary Duties
- Types, copies, gathers and/or distributes a variety of pleadings, forms, records and reports.
- Record, index, retrieve, file, and copy correspondence, reports, and other materials.
- Responsible for total file management on cases within their assigned division/unit.
- Provide victims and witnesses with notifications of all future hearings and status updates.
- Coordinate and participate in meetings with necessary witnesses to prepare for testimony.
- Assist victims with claims for restitution in criminal cases.
- Calendar all necessary events and deadlines on assigned prosecutor's calendar.
- Assist in trial preparation by creating: trial notebooks, redacted audio/video files, power points.
- Expected to work normal office hours.
- Operation of General Office Equipment: Phone, Personal Computer, Copier/scanner.
- Perform other related work as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Possess a high school diploma or its equivalent.
- Possess a valid Kansas Driver's License.
- Pass a criminal background check.
- Experience with a PC and basic programs: Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Ability to understand the policies, procedures, and services of the District Attorney's Office.
- Basic knowledge of the Kansas Judicial System
- Ability to learn and utilize specialized language and terms.
- Ability to deal with other employees, clients, and other members of the public tactfully and courteously.
- The ability to lift, push, or pull up to 45 pounds.
